Maria Donnai
After a career in the veterinary sector, Maria returned to education to study Fine Art at Hull College. In 2022 she achieved a BA in Fine Art, continuing her studies to complete an MA in 2024. During this time, she enjoyed working with porcelain and glass, making small sculptural pieces that can be assembled to create larger installations. She uses these delicate materials to reflect on the fragility of nature.
She participated in INTER_CHANGE, a mentorship program run by Humber Street Gallery in 2024 and has subsequently had her first solo exhibition, Deep Unknowns, at 87 Gallery in Hull.

A Delicate Interface
Glass, Porcelain
39 x 19 x 15 cm
A Delicate Interface is a mixed media sculpture. Porcelain provides support for three thin strips of glass that have impressions of shells and ammonites within them. The glass element has been made using a technique called pate de verre, a traditional heritage craft originating from Egypt.
Inspired by the fast-eroding East Yorkshire coastline, the layers of different materials reference the geological layers that can be seen in the cliffs. This work encourages reflection on the fragility of nature and our need to protect and preserve our coastline for future generations to benefit from.
